Mythbusting – the truth about Health Coaching!
Have you ever thought about reaching out to a Health Coach? Do you maybe wonder what a Health Coach actually does? What good are they? How can they help you?
Sometimes it is easier to understand what they are not. A health coach is not a primary care physician or a naturopath. They are not a nutritionist or a therapist. They are not a fitness trainer or a mental health practitioner. But they CAN and DO work with some or all of those people in order to support you in your health goals!
Here is even more exciting news…Health Coaches are specialists…in habit change! They are masters of how to transform your habits so that you can LET GO of old ones that are no longer serving you well and LET IN the ones that are aligned with what you most want for your health.
They understand, listen, teach, share, inspire, encourage…AND effectively use coaching methodologies in order for their clients to get what they most want for their health, while they are feeling supported and capable! As Health Coaches, we ultimately aim to create healthy habits that are sustainable…and prevent the effects of lifestyle disease – heart disease, obesity and diabetes to name a few – from taking the enjoyment out of our lives.
A good health coach has a good system, offers loving support and results-oriented accountability in order to their clients to reach their health dreams – those goals that they are fully capable to achieve.

I want to bust up some of the myths around health coaching so I thought we could play a FUN game of true or false. I am a lover of all games…like ALL! I don’t think I’ve met a game that I don’t like! In fact, some of my favourites include: Kaiser, Sequence, Charades, Memory, Scrabble, Smart Ass, Horseraces, Baseball, Aggravation, Trouble, Dice, and of course Probe and Chinese Checkers with my mom! 1 . FALSE! - You have to be resident in the same location as your Health Coach.
We can work together regardless of where you are in the world…you in the comfort of your own home or whatever location you choose! You don’t have to schedule another outing, or find and pay for parking, you just BE where you want. All you really need is a quiet, comfortable spot, free from distraction for an hour each week. Easy!

2 . FALSE! - Changing your habits is impossible
Our life “is a mass of habits” wrote Charles Duhigg in his book titled The Power of Habit (one of my favs!) It identifies habits as “those choices that all of us deliberately make at some point, and then stop thinking about but continue doing, often every day.” Then ultimately, we go on auto-pilot and just continue with the same automatic behaviours. By understanding how to break these habitual patterns, we can rebuild and create new ones, however we CHOOSE.
3 . FALSE! - Working with a Health Coach involves overwhelming exercise
One powerful way to make new habits stick is to do things you love. So good thing that there are so many different kinds of movement – we are sure to find one you love! Movement is an essential part of good health – heart health, muscle strength, maintaining bone density, and flexibility – all important things for a body that feels good and functions well. AND movement does not need to be excessive to be effective. A little makes a can make a big difference!
4 . TRUE! - There is choice in what I can eat – I don’t have to be follow a strict diet or eat things that taste gross.
My health coaching program is all about options and choices. We experiment with foods that give you energy and then eat those in abundance. We identify foods that take away your energy and then see what happens when we avoid them. You know you best! AND, your body is the best dietary experimentation lab around so there is not one “perfect recipe” for everyone. We love experimenting with whole foods that naturally taste great!

8 . FALSE! - I have tried this crap before and nothing will work or last – I will just suck!
This is not a diet or an extreme program. It is designed to create habits that last. Even if you have felt like you have tried everything in the past, you might still feel stuck and wonder why. If your underlying habits have not shifted, you might still be doing the same things that you have always done. If you WANT something different, you have to DO something different. Here is your CHANCE…the CHOICE is yours!
9 . FALSE! - I am too old to start
Ah, this age might be exactly when you are READY to start! The best time to start is now…when you know you need to DO something different. There is no one right or best time or age to make changes to your life that improve your health! I ask you though…when is the last time you did something new for the first time? Hmmm…what good things might result?

10 . FALSE! - It takes too long and I don’t have the time
Ah, we might not have enough time…so there’s no time to waste! I wonder what kind of time would open up for you if you made yourself and your health a priority a little bit each day or each week? What positive affects would that have on your life and those you love most? How would it affect your focus, energy, weight, stress? Maybe by making yourself and your health a priority, the opposite might be true…you might just open up more time and possibilities than you thought possible!
11 . TRUE! - Both men and women of all ages can do this
This is absolutely the truth. Whatever your gender or age, YOU CAN DO HARD THINGS! And they don’t have to be hard when they are actually fun! Together, we only do things that you enjoy, not things you despise…those things are not likely to create habits that stick or anyone actually likes! I work with people from 35 + and there is no perfect age for you to feel GREAT!
12 . TRUE! - People might become uncomfortable with the ways in which I am trying to change
Yes, it sometimes happens that people become uncomfortable with what you are trying to do. However, their opinion of you is none of your business. Sometimes people want to hold us back because they fear moving forward themselves or they wish they were trying new things… like you are! Either way, our goal is not to play small to make other people feel better. In fact, the opposite might be true…others may be inspired by the steps you are taking with your Health Coach in order to have the health you want.
So, I hope this offered some clarification for you when you think about how to move forward with a Health Coach…and INSPIRATION for you to reach for your health dreams! What might be possible for you?
